Default v40 tdi -00 won´t start. Advice needed! (purchase)

Hi guys,

I found volvo 1.9 tdi 2000 which has a big problem. It wont start. Well, as the owner said it start somedays. Sometimes it might work days, sometimes not start along the whole week (she said winter was bad, this spring is better) At the moment it do not run. Starter runs and no warning lights or anything light up. Just wont start.

As the word of owner they have changed / tried:

New battery (fully charged)
new fuel filter
new nozzles ( or whats the official english word..)
new glow plugs
new glow relay

As she said if they kept this car plugged (to heat up) few hours it started. Well, I think at the moment it wont help anymore.

She told if they put diesel straight in to the manifold (is that right word?) the engine will run as long as you pour diesel..

The car itself is quite clean. No rust. Quite clean overall and all the other stuff is working (windows etc.).

It has pricetag 600€..

So my main question should I get it and do you think there will be a big cost of repairing? This will be my second car and I will not need it on the road yet. So time is not a problem!

Thanks for your advices and opinions!

(And sorry if there is some mistakes in my writings - this is not my mother language at all

There are no diesel Volvos in the USA so many commenters here won't be familiar with this car.

I have owned a diesel Volkswagen so I can tell you it is a big mistake to pour diesel into the manifold to start the car. You should not use any kind of starting fluid as a diesel engine can easily be hydrolocked as the combustion chamber is so small.

You will probably find the problem is the fuel injection pump and this can be quite expensive to fix.

If you decide to buy the car you should first do a compression test on all cylinders to rule out mechanical problems (broken piston rings) with the engine.

thanks for your replay!

Well all these are made by the current owner but I think they just tried if the engine will run. (like putting down some possible faults..)

But I wont do it..

I was looking a car to be my project. As I can see I can find some used parts, like pumps and so on, under 100€. Being honest that is quite much still for me.. But as I said I have time an some budget.. And I do not need to get it fixed like in a week. So I just wanted to hear some opinion should I challenge it and see what I can do. I have no previous experiece with car repair. Well I am owner of many different older cars and I have done some small repairs, but nothing much. As Im interested to learn I think this came up pretty interesting case..

Diesel is something I have never owned before tho..

The hard thing is that because the car wont fire up thats like a big thing. But the word of the owner when it start it will run great and wont stop during the drive. So I think there isnt / should not be any big mechanical faults, is that so? lol, I know u cant say never or no!

If that is true then there should not be any mechanical problems like broken piston rings.

You should try asking the same question here - volvoforums.org.uk - as there will be diesel car owners on this forum.
