Smile Where is the Volvo 30862380 failure sensor located?

Hello:

I am working on my 1st Volvo, a 2000 V40 wagon. Neither the left or right lower brake lights are working. However the top center LED brake light functions. Can anyone give directions where exactly to find the Volvo Part # 30862380 inside the wagon? It is listed as a failure sensor. I'm near exhausted looking for the location in the front lower cabin of the wagon.

Thanks,

Glenn

The location of the sensor can be found by checking the Volvo Parts Webstore (Volvo Genuine Parts and Accessories | Volvo Canada). It would appear that it is located in the center dash area below the windscreen. You will probably need to remove the radio first, then the heater controls and finally the air vent to get at this item.

Thanks for the navigation to the failure sensor. I plan to remove the radio and work upward to find that part. It is placed in a not so easy place to access, that explains why there are not many sold in the used market. I examined the V40 electronic schematic in a Haynes and it seems that the failure sensor distributes the power from the brake pedal switch to the brake stop lamps. Interestingly, the AllData DIY.com electronic schematic on the V40 does not have the failure sensor included. Instead it has the CEM (central electronic module) as the distribution point to the brake lamps.

UPDATE:

I removed the radio, climate control box and top vent cover in the center console to locate the Volvo failure sensor and WAS NOT able to find the part. It seems having a borescope would save time locating it. There are many borescopes on the market. A few models connect to your phone or tab for viewing the cameras image. Does anyone have a borescope that they give thumbs up?
