1.6 DrivE emissions test (soot)
Hi everyone, first of all I'm new to the forum and Volvo. I started working on cars when I bought a Citroen van two years ago to convert into a campervan and had to do some mechanical work on the van and the engine. This sparked my interest in working on cars in general...
Anyway, I got hold of a 2011 Volvo V50 1.6 (DrivE) Diesel with about 120000 km's on the clock. I think this engine is also called the D2.
The car is in mint condition but it has 2 issues:
- It failed diesel soot particle testing (the testing procedure just got stricter in Belgium and it doesn't meet the EURO5 standards, we don't know if it ever met the standards or how long the issue has been present)
- the start/stop function doesn't work anymore.
I'm planning on plugging my universal OBDII reader in the car to see if it throws any codes. Then I'm planning on driving it a bit sporty on the highway, in the last 2 years the car only drove about 20km's a week on slow roads.
My initial thought about why it is failing emissions is because it was driven very little lately, and without getting the engine up to temperature and lack of heavy load, the DPF can't clean itself. Maybe this is also causing the start/stop to stop working?
Or, something is up with the EGR, afaik the EGR is still the original one from factory and never been cleaned. From experience with my van, I know it can get clogged up with soot fairly bad.
Any tips, advice for this particual vehicle more than welcome!
Thank you

So, some new information: 3 out of 4 injectors throw the "offset learning at maximum limit" code.
The dealer advices to change all 4 injectors, which is costly, especially because the car will not be allowed into belgian's 'low emissions' zone after 2024...
Injector cleaner is on the way, but I doubt it will change anything...
