Default Breather pipe (?) open.

Hi all,

I just bought a x-hand (no owner records, but in good condition) V50 2.0 Powershift (petrol) and upon closer inspection at home saw this pipe (?) that has an open end. It is my 1st Vovlvo and I do not know the ins and outs on the engine. I took a photo of the pipe (see attchment) indicating the two ends of the pipe with arrows. Was wondering if this is normal or must the open end be attached to another piece. I would appreciate any help with this. I plan do do a normal self-help service (oil change, plugs, filters, etc) asap because I do not know when the last service was done, but the pipe is a mistery for me. Thanks in advance, Feetloose. PS I am in South Africa and tried to look up the vin number (YM1MW434BB2624590) on the internet, but all the software I found said unknown vin.
