This is my first posting and I'm excited to be here with other Volvo enthusiasts. I think I've come to the right place to get the real truth behind factory roof rail installation... my choice or no choice?

Do I have the option at the factory level to forgo the installation of roof rails on a spec'd built 2011 V50R? My dealer rep says NO I do not. Roof rails would have to be removed at the dealership level and new molding purchased and painted to match the vehicle. I believed this to be true until I read some posts claiming roof rails are completely optional at the factory level. Does anyone know the real story here?

On my 2005 the roof rails were part of one of the packages. I looked at the 2011 and don't see it listed with any of the packages. It almost seems to imply that it is a retailer (dealer) installed option.

 

Hi AutoNaut, thanks for the reply. I confirmed with the dealer that there is no chance of forgoing the roof rail installation at the factory level. Removal of the roof rails would have to be done at the dealer level. That's going to cost money because new moldings would have to be purchased and painted to color match.

I think what is going on here is that the roof rails are now standard equipment on the R model and not considered part of any package. Hence, no chance of choosing what you want when it's OEM. Were you looking at a dealer level list of options / packages or on the Volvo website? My dealer said the roof rails show on their list as standard equipment on the R.
