Default Major oil consumption... help...!

Hello, Im new to all of this. Im also a first time volvo owner. Ive had my 2006 volvo v50 2.4i for about a year now. Had a few bumps but recently ive had issues with oil consumption. to be honest at first i wasnt changing the oil. Where i bought her was doing it. The first time i changed it was about a month ago. My oil filter was half caked with sludge. I could scoop it out of the filter housing. And she took forever to drain. I switched to full syn. I drove her 1,000 miles and due to how much sludge i had i figured i would change just the filter to try and speed up the process getting some of that out. Well thankfully sludge wasnt really the issue when i changed it. But the fact that in that 1000 miles my car had consumed 4 quarts of oil. She doesnt leak, smoke, nothing. So quiet sometimes idk if i even started the car. Please help! I honestly dont know much about these cars. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -Tasha

If it isn't leaking, its burning it. So possible piston rings, valve seals or PCV system. I'd start with the PCV and drop the pan to clean it out. Hopefully it doesn't need an engine. But hey, you probably saved $100 by not changing the oil.

What is the current mileage on this 2006 V50.
Do you know any history of the previous owners driving. i.e. short or long distance driving in general?
Short distance running increases the sludging problems significantly.

Those 2.4 engines are known to have oil consumption problems. Ive replaced multiple engines because of it.

Shes got 145k had 108k when i got her. I drive atleast 100 miles round trip daily to work. Previous owner im not sure. But i know it was an elderly woman so im assuming not far enough to get the oil hot enough to burn the condensation out. Ive had some people tell me i need to go back to conventional and some say i should use a heavier oil. Idk. Its my first volvo. Love the car but dont love the issues.
