Default new v50 owner

hello to all

i am new to this forum so i introduce myself

my name is pedro i am from portugal and i bought a volvo v50 2.0d with 178.000 km on it, so far so good except for a clunk or knocking noise on the right side

puchasing that clunk i already changed almost everything in the front suspension and also the engine and gearbox mounts, below the list

new shocks and upper strutts, swaybar bushings, lower ball joints, lower arms bushings, inner/outer tie rods, lower torque mount, gearbox mount, right side engine mount,

when i first start the car i can year the same clunk, so i am assuming the right engine mount as gone bad, as less then a year.....

the mounts are all febi bilstein, as i was told it was a good brand

after all this called volvo for original oem right side mount price, they told me i had to replace also the bracket where that mount is attached, as it was replaced by the factory for a new one

can this be the problem i am having?

if anyone has any experience with this, many thank´s

sory for my bad writing

thank´s all

If the clunk happens without the car moving (when just starting it, or putting it in gear) then yes, the engine / torque mounts are the most likely culprits. Often, you can see which mount has the excess play if you watch while a (trusted!) assistant shifts through P-R-N-D-N-R a few times.

There are (if your diesel variant is like the petrol version in the US) four mounts, including the right (engine), left (transmission) and a couple parts for the rear lower "torque mount", which both should be replaced. Again, this assumes your car is like mine (which I don't have any longer). And FWIW, there are a lot of truly awful parts floating around the world right now - some are even marked and sold as OEM / Volvo parts, but are really substandard knock-offs from who knows where.

Make sure you replace the upper strut mounts as well (they do wear out, and can make significant noises, though not without the car moving).

Febi is the OEM supplier for many of the Volvo bushings/mounts so yes they are a quality supplier.

hi mine is also doing the clunking when putting it in reverse or drove I have a 07 Volvo s60 do you think it could be the lower transmission torque mount as well the car runs smooth and shifts perfect but the really hard shifting when shifting gears has me worried

Not sure if the S60 has the same mounts, but the concept is the same. You need to physically check out the mounts - if it's a serious clunk when putting in D or R, and when shifting, the bad mount(s) should be obvious.

I took the mount off it’s the lower transmission torque mount and it is bad it has a bunch of play in it. I just didn’t think something that little could cause such harsh shifting

Actually, the shifting is as smooth as ever. It's just that the transmission "absorbs" the torque when it forces the engine to slow down its RPMs when shifting to a higher gear. Normally, that's not a dramatic event, but if one of your "torque mounts" is really bad, it's enough to start hammering the metal bits against each other.

Congrats on a successful diagnosis (and I presume soon, fix).

thank you for the information.
I also have a code that is popping up on the car it’s a p0863 transmission communication circuit could that also be a reason for rough shifting? If so would I need to go to a Volvo dealer to have the system reset or updated?

I was hoping you were just feeling "normal shifts" as harsh due to that bad mount. That code is saying that your ECM is having trouble talking to your TCM, which could due to one or more of a host of reasons. I'd suggest scanning the car with a Volvo-specific scan tool to see if it can tell you anything in addition to just the OBD code.

Barring that, I'd try just disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to see if you might get lucky and clear a glitch (something that can happen occasionally to anything with a microprocessor). The other cheap and easy thing to try would be to remove, clean and re-seat the connectors for the ECM and/or TCM.
