Default Placing Drive Belts

I am changing the outer and inner drive belts. I have removed both belts. Upon replacing the inner belt I over torqued the inner tensioner and broke the socket where the star bit fits into the tensioner. Its a very small chip, however the star bit will no longer work to remove tension. 2?s...Keeping the old tensioner, can I relieve the tension some how to put the new belt on and if so will that change the weight of the tensioner itself affecting car performance...does the engine have to be lowered to get the current tensioner out to put in a new one
