Default V50 fuel gauge sender unit issues

Recently picked up my 09 plate v50 r design. Lovely motor, ticks all the boxes for me. Didn't realise it until yesterday, I'm not sure if the fuel gauge is working properly. It was down to the red yesterday morning, so went to fill up. Got to around £24 in diesel and it started to sound as if the tank was full. Let it settle for a bit and then tried again but just kept cutting the diesel fill up pump. Went in paid, got to the car and the diesel gauge went to just over half way. The wife said the same thing happened to her the other day. Could this be a sticking fuel sender unit? Does anyone know the location as to where they are on the car? Had a quick look under the back seats, found where I thought it was but took the round rubber Bing off and couldn't feel anything. Is it an easy fix?
