Volvo V50 2004 Won't start, throws coolant out of hole
Hey guys.
First post, sorry if this post is in the wrong section/format/style.
I've recently acquired a V50 2004, 2.4 140hp manual.
Unfortunately, it won't start. I've just done a complete service myself to see if it was a plug issue, but to no avail.
New filters, oil, coolant and plugs.
When i attempt to start the car without the cap on the coolant, it absolutely throws the coolant out.
If i close the cap, the coolant shoots out the bottom of the reservoir.
It does this from what seems to be a pre-made hole. Is this like an overpressure warning?
The engine turns over fine, and knocks a bit, but won't engage at all. The oil was black, but had no metal in it at all.
This leads me to believe the bearings are at least okay, and there shouldn't be any major damage inside.. Timing belt is also fine.
I bought the bluedriver obd2 scanner and app, but it doesn't throw any codes at all.
Hence, i'm completely at a loss. I hope somebody has a clue what i could try.
Kind regards,
Jasper.

the cooling system is a closed system designed to run under pressure. The cap on your overflow reservoir is your pressure release mechanism - there should not be a "hole". Sounds like you may be missing one of the hoses or its disconnected. Try going to a Volvo dealer parts web store to check out a diagram for the hose locations and part numbers
If coolant blasts out of the coolant bottle with the cap off as the engine is spinning over - you have a very blown head gasket - the compression of the engine is pushing the coolant out. The hole in the reservoir is what caused the coolant to leak out - then the engine overheated badly (because unlike most other Volvos there is no low coolant warning system on your car) - Now at the very least the head must come off - and it will be very warped, requiring it to be straightened (not just surfaced) - then as long as the bores look ok - (no obvious scoring or melted pistons) you might be ok. The rings may have been damaged - that will cause oil consumption, or if the piston skirts were damaged - you may get piston slap noises or knock sensor codes.
Hopefully your "acquisition" price was very low!
