Default Volvo V50 Engine Clunk after startup

Hi Folks,
Hoping someone can help with this, I have a 2006 1.6 petrol V50 with 115'000 kms, each time I start up I get a ticking noise from the engine for about 15 secs then I get a rather large clunk, which I can hear and feel through the floor of the car, then all the strange noises disappear !! Please tell me someone has come across this and found a cure. Thanks in advance

have you opened the bonnet to watch the engine while somebody else starts the car to see if you can locate the sound? particularly look for any accessories - AC compressor, power steering pump, vacuum pump. Also note any odd movements of the engine during start up (motor mount/torque rod etc). Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? Any other symptoms?

Thanks for the reply, it is a manual car, initial sound is similar to a noisy CV joint then the clunk noise and everything returns to normal, recently replaced, front shocks, springs and wishbones, the noise was there before and is still there now. No other apparent symptoms!!

Do you think it could maybe be related to the starter motor?
i.e. a sticky bendix spring causing a delay in the starter disengaging from the flywheel ringgear.
Mind you one normally hears the teeth grinding with that. Perhaps it releases enough to clear the teeth initially and then fully retracts several seconds later?
Just a theory based on your description ????

I have the Same Problem on my T5 2.4 Estate. The ABS service warning is on but I do not think that is under the Drivers side on My RHD drive version. The Modulator for ABS is on under the battery on the other side.

At the moment she is in the Garage (non Volvo) to see if they can locate the clunk.

To me it sounds like a dog clutch engaging or disengaging. The things that are down there are the Air con pulley and the starter motor.... Air con tends to click and not Clunk. but to check that I am having the A/c checked and topped today.

Eliminate everything and what remains!! So Starter motor D-E looks likely. None of this is affecting the drive... Annoying though because sometimes it feels like you've hit something. Interesting when starting up from warm it does not happen...

My bad motor mounts made clunk sound and they caused the cv joint to make clicking sound too.

I can confirm to all that this is related to the Air con pump assembly.
if you wind down the air fan and turn down the temperature to 'LO' so the Aircon does not activate. And the clunk never happens.
It also never happens when the temperature outside is warm.
So this is something to do with the Pump kicking in.

I have had the Oil drained and refilled from the compressor and the gas reloaded.
The Clunk has gone to such an extent I think it is just a worn pump. The car is 13 years old.
