Default '01 V70 oil trap quiz

What is the part attached to this oil trap. Apparently, this version oil trap was only used on some '01-'02 models. I'd venture to say that it is a check valve, and if so - mine works in both directions (or should I say doesn't work...)

There is a diaphram in there that when it goes bad it makes a horrible noise after driving a little while.

Thanks. Could it sound like alternator bearings going bad? I was about ready to drop the cash to rebuild mine, before I started tackling this project.

The noise was apparent only after the engine was warmed up and driven for a bit - it would never do it cold.

Yes best thing to do to make sure is when it makes the noise remove the oil cap with the cars running and see if the noise goes away.

I wish I tried that before I tore it all apart. Good advice for next time. Thanks

sounds like what is going on with my 01 V70 2.4 N/A with 120K miles! Have heard a whistling, like a vac leak, last few weeks and now last couple days, after car has run for 15-20 mins, it developes a loud SQUAWKING noise like a roller bearing is about to seeze up. Also, when it's squawking real bad, the engine dies as soon as I shift into park.

Since I'm dumb about Volvo's, I took it to local Volvo independent repair shop and was told "the PCV box has a diaphram in it and it is leaking". Repair quote is $450. Does this sound right & fair?

Where is this part located and how hard is it to replace?

The vent box is located under the intake manifold. That price sounds pretty close for a shop.
