I checked it cold while running. It was low, even after putting all of the fluid back in I had drained last night. I filled it up to the cold marker with some Mobile 1 syn. ATF fluid I had. I know that might not be the best to use, but I did. I had to put about 1/4 to 1/2 quart to bring it up to the cold level.

I drove the car about 10 miles, and checked it again with the engine running, and it was up to the Hot level. I think I have the proper amount in there now.

Unfortunately that means I've been driving with it low for who knows how long, perhaps since I've bought it. The test will be when I do my 100 mile round trip to work and back tomorrow to see if it feels different.

I ordered the Mobile 3309 stuff, but for now I'm just going to keep it as is to see if there is a leak. I'm going to drive the car up on my ramps this weekend and scrub all of the residue off around the transmission gasket so that there is no dirt or grease. I'll check it again in a week or two and see if I see any new buildup. Hopefully I won't.

Does ATF fluid burn off at all over time or is there no possible way it should evaporate unless you drain it or there is a leak? Just need to know what to look for in case there is one.

Usually it hangs around and you will see if it is leaking.

Well, I have yet to see one drop of it on my garage floor, so I'm hoping I don't have a leak, but that means it's been low for quite some time.

The shifting is a night and day difference this morning. It doesn't do that harsh disengaging anymore. I guess the added bonus to myself will be that I have two new motor mounts/torque absorbers.

I didn't realize until today that the transmission takes 7.9 quarts of fluid. Is that right? It says it in the book, but I don't understand where that little transmission can store 8 quarts of fluid.

I'm just going to go ahead and order 8 qts of the 3309 stuff and change it this weekend. Is there anything special I need to know? Is it just drain and fill straight forward, or do i have to fill it while running the engine?

I'm changing it because I thought there was less in there and apparently this stop slip Lucas oil stuff doesn't like the cold too much.

You could save some time and money by going to the local Toyota dealer and buying their T-IV transmission fluid instead of ordering the Mobil 3309. The T-IV is the same as the 3309, which is the same as the Volvo fluid. I paid around $4.25/qt earlier this year at my nearby Toyota dealer.

Thanks for the info! I read something about that but I didn't realize it was really the same stuff.
