1998 V70 Transfer Case Issue- I Need Your Help!!!
I would really appreciate some input on this topic.
I have the opportunity to buy a 1998 V70 w/ 150k, for a great price!!!
Unfortunately, there is an issue with the transfer case. The owner has had 3 certified mechanics inform him that it is indeed the transfer case, otherwise the vehicle is in great condition.
Of course, if I purchase the vehicle I plan on using a used transfer case, and hopefully having a mechanic friend perform the repairs. I don't know if this repair is best done in a Volvo specialized shop, and what is the repair rate on the labor is.
Does anyone have any information or experience on this topic with their V70?
Any recommendations?
Or should I keep shopping elsewhere?
I truly do appreciate some expertise with this.
Thanks!!!

Sketchy answers on this one
Hello, I've read on these boards that the bevel gear unit for these cars can be rebuilt. A foreign car repair shop told me there's a differential just before the driveshaft. That section may have issues too. People have removed the driveshaft when the bevel gear goes out to side-step repairing the unit. It took a lot of reading to extract these bits of info. People who actually had this work done and posted are few. Search bevel gear and you'll see what I mean. Almost never is the term "transfer case" used. If the car is in great shape and you aren't in need of the AWD feature, why not? Kira

I think its worth buying if the only problem of the car is the transfer case.. have you asked the mechanic if it was the transfer case electrical switch that's dysfunctional? Good luck on that pal
