2002 V70 dipstick stain
Hello,
I got around to changing the oil in my wife's 2002 Volvo V70 2.4 Turbo that we bought about six months ago. I've been meaning to do it for a while. The oil that's in it had close to 10,000 miles on it. When I got underneath the car I realized that it wasn't a spin-on oil filter (I should have looked inside the Purolator box) and I was afraid of crushing the housing with a strap wrench. I bought all of the socket type oil filter tools they had at the autoparts store and a couple gallons of Valvoline conventional motor oil in it that was on sale at the auto parts store (I already had bought some Mobil 1 since I figured a turbo car is hard on oil.)
As I feared, none of the tools from the auto parts store fit and so I went ahead and changed the oil without the filter. I've since ordered the correct tool and will change it in a few weeks. What really concerned me is that the end of the dipstick is stained brown. I was able to scratch it off with my thumbnail, I'm worried that my letting the car go so long without an oil change has damaged the engine. The oil that's on the underside of the oil tank cap is kind of crusty. It all points to hot old oil. I believe the oil that was in the car was Castrol GTX, according to the recommended next oil change sticker. Is this normal? I've never changed the oil in a turbo car before, but have changed the oil in air-cooled motorcycles, and the dipstick never was stained like this, on the bikes I never went more than 2500 miles, even with synthetic oil.
I noticed that it appears that the automatic transmission may have a slight leak. Where do I check the fluid level at? I didn't see a dipstick for that anywhere.
Thanks,
Eric

Hello, My 2002 non-turbo had a stained oil dipstick after being pampered at the dealership by the first owner for >69K. I had to use paint thinner to clean it. The small yellow trannie dipstick is under the big air tubes. It's left (driver's side) of center--to the right as you stand and look into the engine bay--and has a catch which must be nudged aside. One guy just grabbed and pulled and broke the eye off. Looking for it in the dark with a flashlight would be better than squinting for it on a sunny day. Kira
