2004 v70 brake issues
hello everyone, my wife has a 2004 v70 with 100,000 trouble free miles until i changed the brake pads and rotors last night. she bought the car w/8,000 miles in 04 and at around 40,000 i changed all pads and had the rotors turned without any issues the brakes worked great. last night while changing the front wheel hub bearings i decided to replace the front rotors and pads (now at 100,000 miles). then i put everything back together i pumped the brake a few times before starting the car. i then started the car and heard some funny ticking and clicking noises under the hood that must have been part of the brake system, because the engine was running fine. the noise continued for a few mins briefly and went away. i took the car for a ride and noticed the brake pedal slowly disappears to the floor. the brakes seemed weaker than before. I checked the resivoir and it was full. i bled the front calipers and then told my wife to take it for a ride. she too noticed the brakes seemed soft otherwise there were no noises.
did i ruin something in the brake system when i compressed the calipers to fit the new pads and rotors in??

Check your "retaining clips", make sure you installed correctly, here is the pic:

If thats not it, you need check your master cylinder.

thanks for your reply confused_al, but this is the second time i replaced the front pads and putting the retaining glips back in is something i check over and over to make sure since this is sometimes overlooked, by some mechainics. these brakes are so easy compared to my chevy silverado. it seems as if the pistons won't push hard enough soon enough as if they are still retracted in place. i plan on doing a full brake system bleeding front and back brakes. it is overdue and the fluid is dark.
I would replace the fluid ASAP. Volvo recommends replacing brake fluid every 2 years, as DOT4 or DOT4+ has to be used in Volvo's brake system.
thanks again al and will do.. i explained to the wife that i think all 4 calipers need to be bled and that it would require some of her time to help me. thankfully she agreed.
where might i find dot 4+??
my local napa has dot4

For the best braking power, you want use either Volvo fluid or ATE SL.6. Both are thin fluid in order to maximize the brake response and ABS effect. The bad side of those is you need replace fluid every two years since they absorb moisture rather quick.
