Default 2006 V70, low oil and engine stopped?

Hi folks, my friend was driving my 2006 V70 and after about 500 miles (long road trip), the oil warning light came up, car lost power and just stopped on the highway. The engine didn't make any noise, no catastrophic crunching, wheezing, nothing, just power loss and car won't start. He bought some oil, put it in and the car started back up again and is running.

My question is, does the V70 have some sort of sensor that's stopping the engine from proceeding? I'm surprised the engine didn't just seize if the low was that low, but I guess there's some sort of protection mechanism?

No, there is no sensor that will turn the engine off if it's low on oil or is overheating or insert your calamity here.

How low was the oil?
