Default '99 t5 time for a rebuild but weighing options

Hi to all,
My '99 T5 has logged 290000 miles, and the mileage is starting to take its toll. I've done the regular maintenance, and the car still drives well, lots of power, the 5spd shifts well etc, however, it is starting to eat its share of oil (I have replaced the turbo, PCV, valve seals). Compression is 150psi across all 5 cylinders, but I have not done a leak-down test yet. My guess is the oil control rings are giving up the ghost.

I do intend to pull the 2.3 and do a basic rebuild (bearings, rings, seals) this fall and over the course of the winter.

In the interim, I'm curious to know if I can find a used 2.4 - swap over the head from the 2.3, and the other portions of the intake system, and continue driving. I'm assuming a CEL will show, but will driveability suffer?
Finding a good used 2.3 turbo engine that I can simply drop in is becoming difficult.
Thanks for any insight

Which engine model (ie the B5234T7 number) do you have now and what are looking to swap in? Your 2.3 has an 81 mm bore and the 2.4s have 83 so that makes an interesting choice for head gasket. 2.3s should be easy enough to find as they were used in S70/v70s in 98 to 00, S80s from 00 to 04 and S60s from 01 to 04 as well as some T5 models of C70s in 03 to 05. Check out car-part.com to see what yards have the short block close to you.

Thanks for the response, some good leads where to look. The car has the B5234T3 as it's the T5
model # 1580910.

Could I use the short block from a B5234T2 or B5234T (850 turbo) application(s) and swap over the head, intake (injectors etc) and the turbo/intercooler plumbing? What portion of the elections on the engine may not simply bolt on from my '99 to the older engines?

Additionally, I assume I'd have to find a donor that was from a manual trans equipped car? Are the cranks different between auto trans and manual applicaitons (i.e., pilot bearing where as the auto trans equipped cars would have a crank without one)?
Thanks again.

I'd think so - most of the engine's major changes came when VVT was added and when the ETM was added, updates to sensors and ECUs etc. I doubt there were too many changes to the short block within the 2.3L family. What you may want to research is whether there are the same part numbers for oil pumps, crank/bearings etc.

Perfect, - I'd be swapping over all the induction system, and the heads so the VVT, cam position sensor, crank sensor would come from my current engine. I would think that the knock sensor location is the same too. An important question I have is about the crank and pilot bearing issue?
I came across a few swaps on-line. Notably this one from a uk forum:
How to convert from automatic gearbox to manual on Volvo 850, S70, V70 or C70
not so much for the how to, but instead to read about the pilot bearing. In the write up, the writer states that an automatic equipped car can have the flex plate removed, and a flywheel attached to the crank (but visa-versa is a not possible) - however it's not clear if he had to drill the crank (like you have to do with some American cars) to fit a pilot bearing.
Anyone else know?
Again, thanks,
-A
