'99 V70r AWD running rich
We have a '99 v70r AWD that is driving me crazy and draining my bank account. Let me tell you the whole story, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I took it to a local dealership in Nov. to get ETS recall done. Dealership put on a new ground cable (said the voltage was all over the place and they couldn't read the codes) and did recall work. Drove the car about 50 miles and check engine light came on and it started running rough. By the time I got it back to the dealer, it was running very bad a spewing black smoke. They replace an O2 sensor. Drove another 25 miles, same problem. They replaced an internal clip on the fuel line into the fuel filter. Drove 25 miles, same problem. They replaced MAF. Drove 25 miles, same problem. Went back and complained. They replaced the plugs and drove for a week and said everything was good. Check engine light came on again after about 50 miles but it still ran ok. About a week ago the rough idle/rich fuel mix/black smoke started again. I jiggled some wires and disconnected the battery and it went away. Yesterday it started again, probably worse than ever. Spent today pulling and cleaning plugs as I'd read about excessive oil getting on the plugs from bad filler cap gasket. Seemed to work at first, but after 5 miles it was just as bad as ever. I'm wondering if the MAF is bad again? Would clean the throttle body and distributor if I could find them. I am fed up with this car - please help!

Hi,
any codes showing up?
0. ETS recall unsuccessfully done
1. a leaking oil filler cap is indication of PCV system and risk of main seal leak-cleaning
2. running rich: fuel pressure regulator, ICV; vacum lines, leaks in air intake
3. problems occur with warm engine > coolant temp sensor

thanks

Thanks so much! I have a chance to get to advance auto to check codes before posting on the forum but I'll try to do that today.
0. I wondered about the ETS recall as this all started after that initial work. I'm not sure if the dealer will hear me on that though as they say volvo has really come down hard on doing the recall work as many dealers did it without cause initially (fixed cars with no codes).
1. I cut a gasket for the oil filler cap (in addition to the orig. gasket) and that leak seems to have stopped - I think.
2. Where would I find the fuel pressure reg and associated vac lines?
3. Also thought of coolant sensor as that's one of the few sensors that haven't been replaced, and the fan seems to run at odd times (to me at least). Thanks again. Matt

1. "I cut a gasket for the oil filler cap (in addition to the orig. gasket) and that leak seems to have stopped."
- be aware of the crank case pressure not getting too high and blow your main rear gasket
2. "Where would I find the fuel pressure reg and associated vac lines?"
-in my 850-94 it is located between injectors, vacum clearly visible from diribution tower
3."They say it needs another O2 sensor (front this time) and a software update for the MAF"
- O2 is easy to claim, I can cause low mix by removing the first air inlet tube (2ft) from the air cleaner inlet side only ie. all leaks can cause it but can be connected to MAF and it's software as sensitivity (tolerance range) as well
