I just bought a 1998 V70 T5 with 123,000 miles. The "mechanics" at the dealership supposedly sent the ABS module out to be fixed prior to me purchasing the car (at my request). I drove it home about 50 miles on the highway, stopped at a light and BOOM, the speedometer stopped working. The same thing happened intermittently the next couple of days and the dealership came to pick it up and drive it for a few days. Supposedly, they could not get the problem to recur. So, I went back and picked it up today and BOOM, same thing happens. I called and gave them a piece of my mind (they also sold the car with a dead key alarm, and today could not get the one I purchased off eBay to code to the car). Anyway, they do not seem to have much techinical expertise, so I am taking the car to a local independent shop. Any thoughts on what to tell them to try in addition to (maybe) a new ABS module? I have heard that the solution could be as simple as cleaning the wheel sensors. Thoughts? Thanks!

If it is ABS module they should replace it under warranty.

 

Thank you for your reply. Do you mean the warranty from the rebuilder of the module, or do you mean that there is some sort of extended warranty from Volvo on the original part because of all the problems customers have experience with them in general?

Jesus, I got the same thing happen to my 99 GLT also. so how did you fix it at the end?

 

Sorry to take so long to reply, but they just got the car fixed. They had to send the ABS module back to be redone. It is working properly now. However, I am unhappy with the fact that it took two weeks!

Also, one of the key fobs was not working. I replaced the battery, but still no go. They tried to recode it but couldn't. They said that my theft module must have been replaced in the past and they could not find the codes or any record that it had been done. Funny, since they told me that only a Volvo dealership could do it and this car was always serviced at their dealership. So, I had to pay $300 plus for a new theft module in order to get two working key fobs...they should have absorbed the cost themselves!

Sucks about the module. I would have made them send it to a Dealer to get it reprogrammed.

 

Sorry, I wasn't clear...this was the dealership who replaced the theft module. They had told me that they could not code the second of two key fobs because the module had been replaced sometime in the past...BUT, they had told me earlier that I had to bring the fob into them to be coded because only a Volvo dealership could do it. So, when the were not able to recode it (due to the supposed earlier replacement of the antitheft module), I pointed out to them that, hey, it had to have been you who replaced it in the past since only an authorized dealership could do so and the car had always been serviced there for everything else. So, THEY were the ones who lost the codes and therefore THEY should have absorbed the cost of replacing the module.

Suffice it to say, I will not be purchasing a Volvo from them when the lease runs out on my 2007 XC70...I will be headed to the local (and much closer) Mercedes dealership, with a small tear in my eye for the 2010 C70 convertible I had planned to get from this dealership...
