Default Cel p0442 & p0012 ?

Heh guys, just bought this 2002 V70 about 2 weeks ago and it seems like all I am doing is trying to clear codes. Oh well, that's what I get I guess when I move up a couple of model years. (1998 to 2002)

I went to Pep Boys (Ugghh) last night for another chance to pull any codes. They pulled two (2) codes for me. Actually the same two codes as 10 days ago. Here they are but not sure what to fix next.

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened: A loose or improperly affixed gas cap. A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand) A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube. Other small leak in EVAP system. (I just replaced the gas cap with a new Volvo one.)

What causes the P0012 code?
* The variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil control valve (OCV) stuck in the open position.
* The camshaft phaser is damaged and stuck in the retarded position.
* Oil flow problems to the VCT piston and phaser.

for the 0442, a common problem for the V70s is the J-tube back by the charcoal canister. There are Youtube vids that talk to this. For the P0012, it can be the cam position sensor or the VVT gear. The VVT is driven by oil pressure so they can get clogged or varnish that can restrict the camshaft advance. Some people have had success doing a Seafoam treatment to clean the oil galleys but more likely ;you need to r+r the VVT assembly on the exhaust cam. Again there should be youtube vids to guide here.

I agree with the above. On the P0442 I've changed a few gas caps that had bad seals. I discovered that Wal-Mart sells the Stant cap that fits Volvo for about $5.00.

For the VVT code, some try to clean the solenoid but I've had better luck retrofitting the solenoid to the later design. When Volvo sells you a replacement solenoid for these, you get the new wiring adapter. You can also find these all over eBay (the later design). Just make sure you get the new wiring lead that comes with the later design if you go that route.

The solenoid gets weak and ohms goes up when they get hot and can no longer function. When the vehicle is warm, take an ohms reading across the solenoid pins.

mt1627, when you spoke of a "VVT gear", do you mean internal to the engine? Are you saying that I will have to have a mechanic open up the engine and replace a cam gear? Also concerning your post, I believe there is a cam position SENSOR and also a cam solenoid. During my recent research it would seem that the latter of the two is the one that gets clogged and needs replacing.

tony1963, I think my part number for the solenoid is 36002145 which supposedly replaced an older part number. Is this what you are referring to when you speak about wiring adapters. Will I have to cut the existing wiring on my present solenoid or is it a plug 'n play?

If anyone has a Volvo P/N for me on that "J-Hose" to the charcoal cannister, it would be most appreciated. I had to laugh the other day when I called a Volvo dealer. They are now not wanting to give out OE part numbers anymore over the phone. I was surprised at this but I guess there are many more options in 2018 to get your Volvo parts.

I think that the part number that you are quoting is the one for the intake cam. I've checked my diagrams and the one for the exhaust is 36002146. Here's one on eBay. Notice the electrical plug in is different than yours unless it has been retrofit.

tony1963, the intake solenoid is the one I need. for the code P0012. When the guy pulled the code it said "Intake" on his reader.

Got it! I searched that part for a used one and found this.

This one barely has enough of the wiring end to retrofit. However, the only way to get the wiring harness is to either buy a new one or a used with enough of the harness attached to rewire.

If you end up rewiring a later design, the wire colors are important.
