Default Check Engine Light

I just bought a 2000 V70 GLT with 55,000 miles on it and while my wife was driving it back from the dealership, the Check ERngine light came on. Is this a common problem? I took the gas cap and rescrewed it but that didn't work. Based on past posts, I am going to autozone to have them check the code. I have an 87 760 turbo wagon that I have had no problems with at all and I love my Volvo mechanic. Will he be able to fix the problem since it is a 2000? THanks

The CEL lights come on pretty frequently on the newer Volvo's. Your doing the right thing taking is to have it read and cleared. I always clear them once and if I get the same code again look into fixing the problem. I bought my ODB-II scanner from AutoZone. The 2000 V70 is basically the same as the 850, so I would think your mechanic would be able to work on it.

If he is a Volvo mechanic then he should have no problems at all.

But if you just bought it from the Dealer and it came on on the way home I would take it back and make them clear/repair it.

Did they sell it to you as a Pre certified car?

I doubt that the dealer will sell a 1999 as a CPO. Also, we know that the MAF will set off the CEL and they do fail on the Volvos.

I have seen many 1999's sold as CPO's.

It could also be a loose gas cap, Throttle body, ETC.

Thanks for all of the info- Took the car to AutoZone- Where is the computer diagnostic plug in? Figured I needed to pull out the plastic underneath the steering column. Didn't bother since I was taking it to my Volvo mechanic Monday morning. FYI- Autozone here charges you $ 180, then lets you return it. Car wasn't a CPO as it was from a Dodge dealership, they offered to check but I'm about 25 miles away in LA traffic and I figured they would just get the light to shut off without really fixing it. Thanks again for the info. Last q? What is an MAF?

MAF=Mass Air Flow sensor. It measures the amount of Air going into the engine so the computer knows how much Gas to pump through the injectors.

The OBDII plug is in the center console.Lift up the lid and you will see a cover under the front part of the console. I think it says OBDII on it.

My Volvo dealer tells me the CPO cut-off is five years.

Took the wagon to my mechanic- he says that the OMD-II won't work on 99 up. It just gives a generic reading. Anyway, after we got the car back from hiim, the check engine light was off!
