Default clicking sound when egine is off

I have a V70 T5 2001 RHD. It has just developed a ticking noise from the front right of engine bay which is noticable when engine is off. It comes and goes but is still there when the car hasn't been used for days. Does anybody know what this is and if its a problem. Thanks

Uh, you mean ticking like a bomb?

Have you got rats? No, seriously?

No don't think its rats! much faster clicking/ticking noise more like a fan going but rubbing against something. Could it be a turbo fan on the front right side?

Hello, "...but is still there when the car hasn't been used for days." It appears this thing can run for days and not kill your battery. Here's my guess: Does your car have a secondary air pump? That's the "fan-in-a-box" which pushes air into the cat to heat it up quickly upon startup. I've read the electronics are in the case's bottom where they're subject to damage from accumulated water. Have a 3' piece of 1" hose ready. When next you hear this open the hood (bonnet) and move around the suspect area-both high and low. Use the hose to "reach" into places your head can't fit and listen. Park with your nose uphill or on a few pieces of wood laid flat to get a little height. Don your play clothes and be ready to get on the ground so you can reach points rear of the radiator. If you still can't locate the source try pulling one fuse at a time until it stops. Also, depending on how officially your dealership people behave, maybe a service writer would come out from behind his desk to listen to it. Sometimes they're helpful, sometimes not. Of course that's when the noise will turn off with the car. Kira

Tried pulling the fuses and the fuse that stops this noise is the electronic module-ceiling fuse in the passenger compartment which controls interior lights + garage opener. How odd then that there is noise from the front right engine compartment

Default well?

Hello, Does it resume making noise when the fuse is installed? Can you start the noise and stop it and home in on it? Now the dealer should throw you a bone and tell you what it is and whether or not it'll discharge your battery and leave you stranded. Kira

Hi

I have got exactly the same problem in that:
- when the engine is first turned off/vehicle locked there is a loud rapid ticking noise at the front right hand side of the engine (on right hand drive)
- after a short period of time (20-30 seconds) it changes to a slower and quieter regular ticking
- playing with the fuse box it stops when the "Electronic module (ceiling), interior lighting (ceiling)" fuse is removed
- only problem then is that the footwell lighting then stays on permanently so have had to remove the fuse for this as well
- result is no ticking but very darm in the car!
- if fuse is put back in ticking starts again

Wouldn't be an issue except that it runs down the battery if left for an extended period.

Could possibly have something to do with the alarm siren as I was told recently that the battery for this needed replacing but haven't got around to it yet???

Any advice would be welcome.

Maybe a solenoid having an issue? They make a ticking noise.

Greetings, and thank you for this thread.

I experienced all of the same issues of clicking along with a 5-minute or so louder initial vibration when I opened passenger doors or turned off the ignition. I also tried pulling fuse #28 in the passenger compartment and clicking stopped. I put it back in and clicking resumed.

My wonderful mechanics, who will work on anything with a motor or engine in this town of 1200 traced the source of the noise to the alarm siren module #9452709. I had pulled the fuse for this alarm months earlier because it intermittently started going off for no apparent reason. I didn't need it, really. This clicking sound might have indicated that it was still trying to connect.

The mechanics simply disconnected the 3-wire harness and we did not replace the module. Voila!! Problem solved. I should mention that this module is not easy to access! There was some very colorful language overheard! However, after I got home I went on YouTube and found a demo on how to access it. See:
. Hope this works for you.

If that's the case Kar Kare then I heartily recommend the book:

"RATS: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Creatures"
Author: Robt. Sullivan (2005)

The author assembled research, first hand observations during all-night stakeouts in dark alleys and interviews creating a well described tour of where our world and the rat's meet.

If you're talking RATS, you want to know RATS. Amazon lists used copies. Truly an interesting read.
