In case anyone is following this thread, I had the car scanned today by a shop with a real scanner, which can read Volvo codes, and it showed up as a bad mass air meter. Should have a new one going in today...$500 with the diag fee. Still not sure why the fuel pump is much noisier after the fuel rail pressure sensor recall done by the dealer.

Here is the scanner I use:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/Pro...egoryCode=3389

I bought this about 2 years ago for my H3 and it works fine with the Volvo. It's been able to pull all of the codes on my V70 that have come up so far. I wouldn't know if it can read Volvo-specific codes since I'm not sure if the ones I have received are Volvo codes or just standard codes, but it works well for me on the 3 or 4 cars I've used it on.

That is an OBD2 scanner which can be purchased at any auto parts store, online, ebay, etc for less then $100. A Volvo code scanner will cost several thousand dollars. The OBD2 scanners can only read OBD2 codes which are not Volvo codes; they are typically less specific and are mostly for emission purposes. There is also about 3 times as many Volvo codes as there are OBD2 codes. OBD2 is on every 1996 or later vehicle as mandated by the government.

This is part of the problem the OBD2 codes are not specific, in my case, OBD2 code P0172 says the car is running rich, which could be quite a few things. The Volvo code said specifically, the Mass air meter was the problem.

OBD2 scanners can be helpful in troubleshooting in some cases but to get the full picture you really need a scanner which can read Volvo codes, which typically means a trip to the dealer (or a shop with a scanner which can read Volvo codes).

Here is an interesting thing I noticed today... the fuel rail pressure sensor which the dealer replaced under recall 181, has part # 30756097 on it (my car is a non-turbo model, by the way)

And...the detailsfor Recall 181 state:

"Reference Bulletin SMB 23-181, TNN 23-181
.
.
.
Part Number Description Qty
983706 Cable Tie 1
30756097 Pressure Sensor, Turbo 1
8699448 or replacing 30756098 Pressure Sensor, Non-Turbo 1"
.
.
.
Shouldn't my car have the sensor with part # 30756098rather then 30756097 ?

Could this be causing the fuel pump to work overtime and make more noise? (Again, the pump was always quiet, right up to the first time I started the car at the dealership after they replaced this sensor..)

By looking at the info it does look like they have the wrong one on there unless the both part numbers are combined later after the bulletin.

Called the parts dept at the dealer and each sensor has its own part number.

I'll be taking the car in on Wednesday to have the other sensor installed on the car.

Sure enough with the correct fuel pressure sensor the fuel pump is silent again. Just goes to show how incompetent most mechanics are...

Hello.
I have same problem with my 2.0t '06.
Started with wine/buzz from back of a car. I had a long journey ahead at that time, so changed fuel pump(new Bosch).
It didn't help, actually it is louder now I guess.

Nowhere at the engine bay I can not find fps, also I can not find pem module(not in the trunk, or at top of the fuel tank).

Could someone confirme do I even have this parts?
Last 6 digits of vin are 595925.

Regards
