Emissions fail due to "NOT READY" status
Hi all. I have a 98 V70 GLT that I recently replaced the plugs and wires on due to a misfire code tripped for cyclinder 2. After replacing the plugs and wires I cleared the codes from the computer. When I went to get emissions check last week it failed due to emissions sensors showing NOT READY. I just checked it again this morning with my scanner and they still show NOT READY. I have driven the car for a while since clearing the codes, but I'm not sure how long/far and how many trips I need to drive for the status of the sensors to go READY again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rolly

I know their is a device that you can get that will tell you when it will be ready. I would drive it for an hour or so steady and it should reset. You may have broken the driving enough that it wasnt on long enough for it to reset.
The late 90's cars will set the readiness codes, however if you turn the key off it will reset them to not ready. It took years but our state finally came out with an "exempt" list of cars with that same problem. It seems like a lot of mitsubishis have the same problem. The list is very specific so if any info is input wrong it will fail it. All the state did was make it so the computer system for the emissions test bypasses that info and passes the car as long as check engine light is off and no ecm codes are stored. Maybe drive it for an hour or so and have the emission test facilty test it without ever turning the key off. Good luck.
OK, well now I really don't know what is going on. This morning I drove about 75-80miles and according to my scanner the sensors are still showing NOT READY. What the heck? Could this be a ecm issue?
You have to drive in what they call a drive cycle. Volvo's are very sensitive and hard to get into readiness. There are quite a few steps and I don't remember them right off hand. Here is an example of how it goes.
Drive with rpm's between 1500 and 1800 for 5 minutes. Stop let engine idle for 70 seconds. Accelerate slowly until 2000 rpm. Drive at 2000 rpm for 6 min. Stop, idle for 60 seconds. Thats about as much as I can remember but you can kinda get the point that it can be frustrating and hard to get readiness to set. Where can you drive at 1500 rpm for 5 min without stopping?? The freeway??? I think not at that rpm speed you will barely get up to 40mph. So like I said it is hard to do but it is possible. Maybe you can do it in the middle of the night but as soon as you turn the key off the readiness resets again. That' all the info I have. Good luck.

Thanks for the help Bigtrev, I appreciate the input. I wonder if anyone out there knows the exact sequence I should be doing to complete the drive cycle correctly. I really need to get this thing to pass. It's driving me crazy!!!![:@]
also keep in mind the Volvo's and aftermarket spark plugs dont like each other, always replace with original OEM and make sure the tips are correct, non turbo and turbo plugs are different.
Sorry took so long to reply very very very busy lately.
The drive cycle was posted already.
Try that Volvo's are one of the worse cars to get to ready status.

Thanks for the info guys! Now if I can just find somewhere I can actually drive in the pattern needed to get ready status. Could be quite a challenge! Thanks again, I'll let you know if I'm successful.
