Default engine problem--question

Hello: I am new to the forum and I own a 2004 V70 wagon. My wife took it for a short drive (8 blocks) this morning and noticed that it was "thumpy." After parking and returning to the car, the message board read, "brake failure-- stop safely" or something like that after startup. She turned the vehicle off, then on again, and a new message, "engine system--service required" came on. Any ideas what this could be or what action we should take (does this mean, for example, that we should have the vehicle towed for service?) We live in Minneapolis and the weather here got much colder the last 12 hours (probably subzero last night) and the vehicle was parked outside overnight. However, it has started and performed well in cold weather before and we just had it in the shop last week for its 40K service check (including a brake check.) Do we try to let it run for awhile to warm up or is this a bad idea given the messages displayed? Thanks for your help.

Dave

Find someplace that can pull the codes and have them pulled.
Try Auto Zone.
