Default Error Message "Emission system service required"

Guys,

I have a 2001 V70 2.4t with 150k miles on the clock. The 'Check Engine' light came on a couple of days ago with the message "Emission system service required". Is there any way of nailing the cause more specifically? Can I extract fault codes in some way that will tell me where the error signal is coming from or do I have to take it to a Volvo dealer?

Mike.

You need to find someone that has a scanner to read the codes from it.

There is atleast 100 different things that can turn the light on.

Thanks, can you recommend an inexpensive reader that is compatible with the V70?

Try, Ebay.com, many scanners dont work with Volvo or Subaru..
but i have seen some that work with Volvo's...You may need to confirm with the seller..
I had the "emission system service" message, turned out to be loose gas cap...
My wife did not tighten it when she filled up...They can be tempremental little asses
when they want to be... The message will go away after a certain amount of key turns..
i'm not sure how many maybe tech knows...
if it's running ok just drive it.
wait for the message to go away and see what happens....

Thanks v70 2.4t, a few days on and the message has indeed gone away! In the meantime I have ordered a reader off Ebay and am awaiting delivery. Presumably the fault code will have been stored so I ought to be able to determine what the problem was!

v70 2.4t
same meesage happened to me 2 days after a re-fuel - must admit in haste to always get going in the gas station i do sometimes struggle to get the fuel cap to screw in properly
anyway - got this emissions error 2 days later. for thei first time. was kind of blaming the new E10 fuel we have here in UK as it was recently i started using it.
read this forum and response - wasnt hoping for much as the free tips often are too much to hope for - went out to the car (2001 v70 auto petrol) and reset the fuel cap screwing in snug and after 2 restarts of the engine the error went away.
lets hope it lasts - and so grateful for the forum - i just know the garages might have taken advantage of this one!!
