I wanted to post this as I did a lot of research on this. I have used the following replacement fluids on this year/model and they seem to agree with the car.

Coolant - Zerex G-05 Very similar specs to Volvo Fluid. Much cheaper. Dilute 50/50 with distilled H2o. Best price at local NAPA. (Napa stores are franchises so price will vary from store to store - shop around) Do a flush before switching to this . Use distilled H20 for the flush.

Transmission Fluid - (My automatic transmission is the Aisin (Toyota) aws50-42 4 speed, NOT the 5 speed )
Toyota Type IV - very affordable $58.20 for a case ( 12 bottles) Buy 2 extra bottles so you have 14 total. Drain/fill 4 times over a short period. I used a Pella 6000 extractor in the transmission dipstick for no muss/no fuss removal - pull the corrugated air pipe off that's in the way - this will evacuate slightly less than 3.5 Liters ( 1 L = 1.056 quarts)) per "sucking" on a hot engine. Measure carefully what you remove and refill with that exact same quantity each time. You should end up with a partial bottle left after the 4 suck/refill cycles.

Power Steering Fluid - CHF-11S Found at NAPA also.

Oil - I use German Castrol 0-30 called "Elf Oil" at the "bob is the oil guy" website discussions. I can only find this at Autozone and it is not cheap but seems to work well in the aging turbo engine.

These fluids are all probably slightly over-spec for the year/model - ie better than necessary but seem to work well. .

 

good to know. I do like thast 0w-30 myself but have switched to 10w-30 edge, due to no price difference when on sale.

 

Hello, I'm your brake fluid. I'd love to absorb the moisture in your system, especially the complex ABS valves and pump. But alas, I'm a blackened slurry of gritty oxydized elements. My heat disipation and lubricating properties are spent. DOT-4 would be just fine.
Another thing to consider is a can of water pump lube. It's cheap insurance.
My friends, the engine and turbocharger, love Castrol 0-30 European Formula. It's name at "BOB is..." is simply GC, for German Castrol. Too hip.
How many miles on this car? Don't forget me...BF

Hello, It's a translucent, milky substance just a tad thicker than water. It comes in 6 or 8 ounce cans. One can per coolant change. I've never failed to find it in a parts store.
When I was a kid the man next door was a farmer with a score of gasoline and diesel powered engines to maintain. He swore by the stuff. Today his grandsons will say, "Nobody [in our family] has ever had a bad water pump." Neither has anyone in mine.
I think it's encapsulated magneseum compound suspended in water. It might be a plastic or PTFE nowadays.
I'm not a lube chemist but at $3 per can I don't have to be. It's like vitamins-it's nice to know it's there but the doctors can still make fun of you.

Yup I use the water pump lube on both my Volvo V70's and my Jeep and GMC P.U. and have been using the stuff since my first car..a 50 Ford 2 door 45 years ago. Out of all the vehicles, I've owned, I had to change 1 pump on my 97 Jeep GCL, do to a bad bearing, and a sealed weep hole..., it was a factory installed pump.????
