Default Fuel Delivery Issue: Any suggestions?

This is regarding our 1999 V70 Non-Turbo Wagon.

Went out this morning and tried to start the car just to try to get a handle on this. The car initially started and then stalled. More attempts to start did nothing.

At lunch I put the pressure gauge on the fuel rail, hooked the battery back up (had it unhooked from doing something else) and turned the key to "acc". I was reading about 41 PSI pressure at the rail. I started the car and the pressure began to drop off until the car stalled. Immediately after it stalled, I could hear the fuel pump relay click and the pressure at the rail jumped back up to 41 psi. I started the car with the same result...pressure began dropping off until car stalled, heard the relay click and pressure back up to 41psi.

I then removed the gauge from the rail and started the car. Again it started and then died as the fuel pressure tapered off. This time though, I did not hear the relay click and more attempts to start the car were unsuccessful. Checked the pressure and it was back down to 0psi.

I unhooked the battery, left it off for a few minutes and then repeated the process again with the pressure gauge attached to the rail. The got the same results as the first time I had the gauge hooked up.

Any ideas?

Have you replaced the fuel filter in the last 2 years?
The relay also could be the problem.

Fuel filter had recently been replaced. I replaced the fuel pump relay and that solved the problem

Smile 99 V70 intermittent fuel delivery problem

Hi all

I hate to be dumb but I suspect my 99 V70 non turbo needs the filter and the relay as it is doing as described here. Can you tell me the locations of each?

Thanks
Bruce

Default 99 v70 non turbo - please assist.

Ok I found the relay and felt it click as a helper turns on the key. The car starts and will idle - I may drive few miles and it dies - will restart and die several times then not start - acts like not getting fuel - let car sit 10 minutes - it will restart and run a mile of so and die -restart and die etc..etc....

Sounds like you're loosing fuel pressure, but that's a guess unless you ck the pressure at the rail with a fuel pressure gauge, like the original poster did.

Fairly common failure on these cars after about 100k mls or so. Typically either the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself. But it could be other things too.

There are tons of posts about this very issue so recommend you do a search for more info. I know I have posted (several times) step by step directions on how to diagnose this issue, as have others.

Good luck and let us know if you need more help.

Thanks gdog - I have looked around quite a bit and found some good posts - I have ordered a fuel pump relay and filter and will try that first. I may need to buy a fuel pressure gauge if that does not work. I could here the pump start and pressure up but after that it got quiet is that normal? - a guage will tell me what I got at the rail - then I will know.

thanks again for the help and if you know of a specific post or key word to fine more info - let me know.

thanks
Bruce

This post might be especially interesting to you since you have a '99 MY

Note many of these posts refer to 850 model but it is mechanically very similar to the S/V70s. There were significant changes starting in '99 though as noted in last post above.

Thanks gdog - I put the relay in and it would not start - sounded a bit funny while cranking - so I checked pressure at the rail and had consistent 41 psi.

I tried starting it again and pumped the throttle several times and it started and has run fine for a week now. Not sure why it sounded funny cranking at first - sounds normal - but it starts fast now hardly turns over at all and it is running.

Thanks for the great forum!!
