Post grinding or vibrating under the hood, please help

I bought a V70 about a month ago and havent really had any problems. I took it to Volvo right after I bought it and they said it was in great shape and the only thing they could see needed fixing was a motor mount but was not a huge deal right now. Well it started the other day after a long freeway drive and it was a almost grinding noise maybe vibration. It comes from the engine area and gets louder when I accelerate. I thought maybe there was something in the fan but there wasent and then I noticed it seemed to come out of the top where you put the oil in. I checked the oil and its fine,Volvo just changed it for me. I am stumped and worried that if I dont get it figured out it will end up costing a fortune. Any ideas at all please?

Grinding noise? Maybe your power steering fluid is low and the pump is making noise?

Thank you for your reply, you know thats what I thought so I went out and checked it just now and no luck. But it does kind of sound the same. maybe not so much grinding but like belts rubbing plastic. I was just out looking at the belts that are wrapped around everything like the alternator and that is where the sound seems to be coming from. I was thinking maybe the alternator but that was replaced the day before I bought the car. and I dont know if the alternator makes noise when itss in trouble. Any other thoughts??

Maybe the bearing on the compressor (A/C)pulley is bad.

Thanks for the heads up. I dont know much about the ac unit, but I know it makes the noise whether the air is on or off. I`m kinda worried that I bought a huge money pit. If I cant figure it out in the next couple of days I`m going to have to take it to the dealership and I really dont want to do that if I can avoid it.

Remove the serpentine belt and start it and make sure it is quiet. If it is then spin the pulleys by hand and see if you can figure out which one is bad.

Take a look at the power steering resivoir and see if there is bubbles in the fluid. If so, look to see at the retrun line port inside the resiovir to see if broken. If so replace it and check after that. Did you get extended warrenty when you got the car?

unfortunately I did not get the extended warranty, I bought from private party. They were the original owners and they had meticulous records of all the services and all the work they had done to it, so I just figured it would run forever since it had been taken such good care of.

Ill try the power steering and see what happens, Thank you for your help

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me trouble shoot. I tried most all of the advice given to me and couldnt figure it out so I took it to the shop. It was a barring in the alternator. It was just replaced so I figure it couldnt be that but I`ll be go to hell, it was a manufacturer defect.
So it was covered which saved me $400.00. I just had to pay the $150.00 FOR LABOR. Thanks again to everyone.

Where did you take it to that re-charged you labor. Or did you go to the different spot.
