Default Hello all, new member with 98 V70

This is my first volvo, I love the looks /quality of build but everyone keeps telling me it's expensive to own!

I got a good deal on it, but it does have 170k miles, and one issue is blowby (some light smoke coming from oil / engine ) -- the exhaust is crystal clear so I hear it's just a sign that engine might be going away...soonish (knock on wood)

Here are some pictures!

can i pick your guys's brains on this:

my abs seems to be perma on. when i break I feel the ABS going all the time - how long could i drive like this?

the check engine light came on yesterday - what are the usual causes of this?

the blowby issue -has anyone experienced it, what recommendation would you have as far as how long it might still run?

Welcome to the forum!

The ABS issue is most likely (common issue on this vintage) the broken solder joints syndrome inside the module; fairly easy to repair for DIYer, or you can take the module out yourself (quite easy) and send it out to be rebuilt for < $100 or so. Google "ABS module repair" + "Volvo S70" and I am sure you find lots of info about it.

RE: blowby; Are you consuming oil? First thing to do is service/replace the pcv system; they tend to plug up after so many miles; esp if car's oil is not changed regularly. You can also ck your compression; will give you an idea of engine condition (should have done that before you bought it actually).

Welcome! I have several '98 70-series. They're great cars. Check the sticky on maintenance that should be up-to-date. The big ones are PCV system (can blow rear main seal), timing belt (can wreck head if breaks).

Volvos are well-designed and most parts are easy to replace, except the AWD V70s (because AWD was not part of original design).

Enjoy, read, and ask questions!
