Hello all, I am new to this site and hope that someone can help.

I just bought a 2001 V70 2.4T with 73,000 kms on the clock. Body and Interior are in perfect shape.

I just put in a new battery 3 days ago and already it has run flat 2 times. I have seen threads on here tracking down the drain. Last night I took out the fuse for the door locks ,vanity mirrors, interior lights, glove box and again the battery is flat. I have now taken out the fuse for the alarm system and will see if that works. I guess it is just tracking down the culprit.

We also have an S60 with 243,000 kms and we love it and have never had any of these problems. I am hoping that the low kms on this one are not from being in the shop all the time. Any help on diagnosing any sooner is greatly appreciated.

Wish I could give some solid advice, but can't. Do you have (or have access to) a multimeter that provides amperage draw? I'm wondering if you were to use that across the fuse terminals you could go through the list quicker (and keep from deep cyclying the battery over and over which is really hard on it). You also might want to check if the battery is shorting internally. Disconnect it, check the voltage and come back and check it later.

Does anyone know if you can wire a small bulb in line across the fuse terminals and gage by how bright the bulb might glow as to the amps the circuit is pulling? Sort of a poor man's volt meter. I'm no EE, but just guessing trying to find a way other than deep cycling the battery. I know there's smarter guys than me that are members, let here from you!

If you were to use a lightbulb, you must disconect the positive batery pole and conect it between the connector & bat. pole it should light dim due to memoriesin radio/computer, if it"s bright start pulling fuses until it dims. make sure all doors are closed and key out before starting. you can also do the same with a multimeter ,it should pull no more than .05 amps.

 

Thanks, for the info. I am taking it in to my mechanic today. As I do not want to wreck the new battery. Our mechanic is a friend of a friend so I know he will not over charge me. Hopefully he is able to find the problem and I do not have to take to the Volvo dealer.

Mechanic seems to think it is the alarm system draining the battery. I can live without the alarm.

But if someone knows a fix it would be greatly appreciated

so it appears that the drain is from the alarm system , when fuse 25 is taken out then I am able to start the car the next day. Problem is that this fuse is also for SRS and locks and dash lights.

No info available on fixing this type of problem. I guess I have to bring to Volvo dealer.

 

took the car in to Volvo and they said that the problem was in the altenator. They quoted $1000.00 plus tax. My mechanic put it in for $650 inc tax.


Car runs great and I am happy as I got the car for $8700.00 and put in $1200. Car now has 75000 kms looks great.

 

TWZ123, thanks for the final solution. It would have been a long time until I checked the alternator was shorting internal. Anyone know how one would trouble shoot this?

How does fuse 25 fit into this? Wouldn't the alt be direct wired (perhaps with a fueable link)? Wish I had an electrical schematic!
