Help! 2002 V70 Engine System Service Required Message
Hello everyone, new member here, first post, looking for some help from the pros. I own a 2002 V70. Since purchase I have had several minor issues including the p0455 trouble code, and a bad O-2 sensor. I have an OB-II reader which I use to clear out any trouble codes that come up. I recently purchased from Volvo a replacement cap and the Check Engine codes have stopped coming up. However, I still have the "Engine System Service Required" dialogue message come up in my DIM. So, I have several questions for you guys. First of all, given the history of p0455 and O-2 sensor trouble codes, and the two month duration that I have been getting the ESSR code, what are the odds that something is critically malfunctioning with the car, and secondly what is the best independent Volvo repair shop that you would recommend in Central New Jersey. I have done some research and understand that a number of conditions may be tripping this code, ranging from the gas cap to the throttle body. As far as car performance goes, I have not suffered any difference in fuel economy or overall performance. This past winter break I did have a transmission problem that I corrected by reprogramming the software. Okay, apologies for the lengthy post, but I'm just trying to determine my next move. Something tells me my ultimate fate is a visit to the neighborhood friendly volvo dealer.
Thanks,
Rob
Thanks,
Rob

Wrong! "Engine System Service Required" is a message that detects a fault in the electronics system. It is probably a bad throttle body. Given that it is an 02 model, go to the dealer immediately and see if this part is still under warranty, given the date of service that the car was originally sold and placed in service.
I just had an 02 with the same thing and the dealer replaced the throttle body N/C.

So, this "Engine Service Required" replaces the former "Check Engine" indicating a problem as opposed to "Serivce Required" indicating a service interval is up? yeeesh, this is progress?
And I wonder why I'm going -backwards- in my model ownership (had a 98 S90, then a 96 855T, and now a 92 745T), HAH!

Pierce, I definitely think Volvo over-engineers their newer models, i.e. 2000 and on. Before my V70 I had a 1996 850 wagon. Besides some wear and tear repairs the silver bullet made it to 230,000 miles before I had to upgrade. Love the older volvos. As far as Engine System Service required, the message indicates a deeper problem, that my consumer grade OB2 reader cant read. Which means a trip to the dealer.

The "Engine System Service Required" is a direct replacement of the ETM light on the 2000 models. You can't get any OBD II codes from it because the codes stored are proprietary, meaning that they are unique to Volvo and Volvo only for this application.
The ETM is 10 years or 200k miles, whichever comes first. If the car was placed in service in 2002, it may still be eligible for replacement.

Kira, my V70 has 90,000 miles on it. I bought it with 75,000, and use it for graduate school. Most of the miles have been highway between NJ and Mississippi. I am using Volvo of Bridgewater, on Rt. 22. I'll let you know how it goes on Tuesday. Crossing my fingers other expenses wont pop up.
