Default Interior light problems

Newbie here from England so Hello to all. Just acquired a 99000 mile 240bhp 97 T5. Love it already after a week. Today went to start it and had a flat battery. Been having problems with the interior light(s) About half the time when the car is started the interior lights - all of them won't go out. The roof switch is turned to the door symbol. The only way I can get them to go off is to start the car then switch off and remove the key. Then, the lights will dim and go off. But often - 50% of the time, when I remove the key the lights will stay on. The override switches for the qaintly named reading lights have no effect on the lights. That's what flattened the battery last night. I had all the lights off as they should have been as I was driving, stopped, switched off, lights came on, got out of car and locked it with remote and lights stayed on but I didn't notice and went out this morning to a dead battery. Where should I be looking?

Thanks for any ideas on this.

Thanks for the reply. The lights that stay on are The 2 front reading lights, the 2 rear reading lights and one by my feet which i took the bulb out of. The is also a relay ticking when the engine is running coming from the rear - the car is an estate - near the CD magazine. The keyswitch light around where I put the key in also stays on. Could it be a sticking doorswitch? Where is the doorswitch? I can't see one.

The door switch is part of the Lock/latch assembly.
I would say the switch is bad. If your footwell light stays on then it is bad.

Sounds like my S70 is having the same issue. My wife complained about all the lights staying on, as well as the ding, ding, ding beeper. Any idea how much the lock/latch assembly will cost for a 1998 S70 GLT?
