Unhappy Leaking coolant

Just bought a volvo V70 SE 10V, 1984cc, 1997. Coolant in reservoir keeps rising (back pressure?), no water in oil. hoses have no leaks. Car seems to be running ok but has major leak. Can anyone help, please? Thanks

Araminta

I have the same situation with my reservoir rising, it happened once in a while in a traffic jam. The reason is because of the loop to bypass the heater matrix. I tried to use end cap at the 2 point on the engine to isolate the heater circuit but it failed (ruptured cos of high coolant pressure). Right now i am using the loop to joint the 2 points on the engine but with a closed valve in the middle of the loop to prevent the hot coolant from flowing back into the engine.

Why the reservoir level keep rising when we introduced the loop to bypass the heater?. Under normal condition when the thermostat is closed the coolant is being circulate back thru the original bypass on the engine side. When thermostat opens less hot coolant will be flowing back thru the original bypass circuit but more cold coolant from the radiator will be entering the engine thus maintaining the engine temp.

When we introduce the loop to bypass the heater we are actually building a new access for the hot coolant to flow back into the engine plus the original bypass coolant existing path. Under this condition this will result less cold coolant flow from the radiator into the engine and tend to overheat the engine. Since there is a restriction on the coolant flow from the radiator eventually the coolant level in the reservoir will rise cos of back pressure.

This symptom is the same as a stuck thermostat.

After installing the loop with a closed valve to bypass the heater circuit i have no problem with the cooling system anymore

Good luck.

Its coming from the reservoir. Driver and passenger footwells are wet. Trying to bypass the heater matrix with hose but water is still leaking. Hope its not head gasket. Not too clued up to be honest. Need to be taken to a mechanic! Probably cost a small fortune. thanks
