Long delay before light is turned on
Hi,
I'm new here - just found the forum today - it's a great place - but I didn't find my problem descriped.
I have a V70 2.4 from 1999 - it's a great car.
The last couple of weeks I have this small problem: I turn on the engine with no problems, but the headlight, seat heating, flashlight, and a couple of other things takes two to four minutes before they are turned on.
In daylight I can drive on before these things are powered on, I'm only missing my flashlight, but at night I can't drive until the headlight has turned on. I don't like always to wait two to four minutes before I will be able to drive away.
Can anybody help me with my problem?
Best regards,
Michael Porotnikoff, Denmark.

Thank you for your quick reply.
What exactly do you mean by "playing with the ignition switch"??
This problem has nothing to do with loose connection in the ignition switch.
If I have stopped the engine shortly (15-30 seconds) then the headlight switch on within a few seconds - as they did before (last month).
I believe some kind of delay / relay is malfunction.
The ordinary users manual doesn't say anything about what the "main relay" is used for - could it be this relay?
How is delay normally made in the V70? Processor controlled or harwired RC delay circuit or something else?
Of course I can ask a mechanic look at the problem - I just have bad experience when they try to solve my problems...
Best regards,
Michael

On the 1999 it still runs from the ignition.
Im thinking ignition switch because it isn't just the Headlights. Try turning the key a little foward or back and see if they come on sooner.

I have tried to switch off the engine and try once again and see if this change the timing - this process just add time to the delay.
Yesterday I stopped two minutes at a shop and the headlight was on after a delay of a few seconds.
Speeding up de engine doesn't change the timing. Changing the power consumption doesn't change the timing.
To me it seems like the delay circuit for the headlight has a short timing constant when the circuit is warm and a longer timing constant when the circuit is cold.
But where is this delay time controlled?

Not that I am aware of. I have never seen one.
Also I wonder if the headlight switch is bad. They are known to go bad. The tabs on the back break and the switch seperates.
