Wondering where i can purchase a used engine for my dads 98 v70xc crosscountry..The car is burning alot of oil and the vehicle smells like oil inside the car when you come to a complete stop..I dont get that the car only has 89k on it and it runs this horrible..He has had it for about 10months so i dont know how well the car was takin care of before he got it..If someone could help me that would be great..Thanks

 

Go to GENERAL VOLVO CHAT. Then in the PINNED thread section click on the VOLVO FORUMS RESOURCES THREAD.

In there you should be able to find ASAP Motors or ASAP Engines, whatever it is. Try them.

 

Have you had it checked?
It might not be bad rings it could be many things making it burn oil.
Plugged vent system
Bad turbo
ETC

 

I just went through this with a '98 V70 XC with 150k and found the rings were worn, but still good enough.

You can get a compression gauge and extension tube for about $50 to check the compression on each cylinder. Disconnect the coil wire, remove a spark plug and screw in the gauge. Turn the engine over about a dozen times with the starter and read the gauge.Record the pressure. Remove the gaugeand pour a teaspoon of oil down the spark plug hole. Screw the gauge in again and check that cylinder in the wet (with oil) condition and record the pressure. Repeat the process for all five cylinders. The closer the pressure readings are for the five cylinders and the closer the wet and dry readings are for each individual cylinder, the better.

In my case, the oil was not being burned, but blown out the oil fill cap because the PCV system was choked.The oil would drip down all over the place and wouldsmell as you describe.When oil is burned in the engine all the smellgoes out the exhaust. After replacing the PCV oil trap, hoses and oil fill cap gasket it stopped loosing oil.

Somewhere on another forum there is a pictoral guide to doing the PCV thing and a more in-depth discussion of checking the compression. I'm no mechanic, but with internet help was able to do it in about 10 hours.

Have a Volvo or other trusted mechanic check the things mentioned above. Even if you have to fix numberous things it will probably be cheaper than an entirely new engine.
