Default New Need help guys!!

I have a couple of questions. I have a 1998 v70 turbo wagon it had a hole in one valve hence the 0 compression reading pulled the head off have valves replaced. Now I am installing it all back. I need to get torque specs for the head. I noticed different numbers everywhere the one that i am leaning toward is 1st stage:14(ft lbs)2nd stage:44(ft Lbs) 3rd Stage:130 degrees. Is that right? Also need tightening sequence. Need help with timing. Can anyone tell me where the timing marks are and what is the procedure to set the timing. I am stuck and the car is in a thousand pieces. This Volvo i bought for my sister and i need to get it running. Any help will be greatly appreciate it.

Sorry, most of us are very busy but I'll try to help and maybe others will chime in. You came to the right place for the right answers.

Before you do anything you should get a Haynes manual and read it, it will give you a good appreciation of what you have to do. I just can't recreate all that info here.

torque spec that I've used on 2 motors 15ft-lbs, 44ft-lbs, 130 degrees. I had to look up the 15, and 44 but you never foget the 130 degrees make sure you have a big breaker bar for this stage.

Torque sequence is basically from the inside out back and forth. Hopefully when you removed the head you reversed this and went in gradual steps from the outside in. This is the way I did it and had no problems.

Timing. Here is where I'm not real sure. I think something in this area changed in 98 model year. Here is a VIDA diagram but our 98 I'm sure is much more like and 850 so let me know if your's look like this and I can send more info.

The crank pulley reference mark can be very difficult to see so get a bright light and look for a very narrow cut in the pulley from the block side in.

Hope this helps. let me know I'm still looking on VIDA for a good pic/diagram of the earlier timing marks.

Thumbs up Man thanks alot

I have timing marks on the cam pullies a slit on both. Do they line up with the plastic cover or other mark? I set engine to TDC then I should line up marks and it should be timed right. Tighten everything down and turn over by hand to avoid any bent valves. Does this sound right to you? Thanks for your reply it helps me out a lot with the torques and other things. I done this on a BMW 528 I have but this is a total different animal. Again thanks for your help. Any info you may have or tips would be great. I am tackling the put back together tomorrow night. thanks again

Default about the diagram for timing

It does look like that. Except the cam pullies look like the one on the right both of them and it has a timing slit on both. When i removed the head I left the pullies on.

Here is a good writeup. it's for an 850 but should be just like yours, follow the link. My personal opinion, I wouldn't use copper spray tack(gasket sealant) on an aluminum engine. aluminum and copper don't get along real well . Might be okay but I wouldn't. I used no sealant and the head gasket instructions said specifically not to use any.

Yes you have to make sure the cams are aligned or you can bend valves. Some use a cam locking tool, I did, some don't. I've read if you have them close and draw the cam cover down slow, it will work. If you want one you can make one the Tracy did or here is how I made mine.
