is it very difficult to change the o2 sensors on a v70 SW non turbo?
are universal ones ok?

It is not that hard. Atleast buy Bosch o2's. That is who makes them for Volvo.

i scored a couple of sensors. looking for info on where to find the one ahead of the catalytic convertor.
anyone out there with info?

Just did this.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy a Oxygen Sensor Socket. It has a slice in it to allow for the wire. With this tool, and some penetrating oil you should be able to replace both sensors in about 1/2 hour.

Also, helps to remove the driver side front tire to get at the connectors. (remove and replace connectors 1 at a time so you don't mix them up)
