oil filter question
OK. I went to auto Zone this morning to get an oil filter for the 2000 v 70 we just bought. I looked in the filter book and there were listings for Fram, Mobil and Bosch filters. I opened the box and it was a screw filter. I remember someone telling me it was a cartridge filter. It is a 2.4 non turbo. Engine style is B5244s. Thanks .
I think you have a cartrige filter on yours. It is easy to tell look under the car if it is a screw on filter there will be a metal filter on there. If it is a cartrige filter then there will be a plastic housing holding the cartrige.
Yes I am on another Volvo forum and 2 Mustang forums.
If it is the cartrige filter you will need a special tool to remove the housing.
Im not sure of the size the auto parts store might know if not you should be able to try then in the parking lot.

Thanks. I got my ramps back from the brother-in-law and found it to be a hard plastic shell. Sounded like metal the first time i tapped it before I raised the car. I assume I need a filter wrech socket to remove this housing. I will go to Bumper to Bumper or Napa tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
I do not believe that Fram or Purolator make the filter you need for your auto. I purchase mine at the dealer. Yes, you need a "special" wrench..................there is a fellow on e-bay who sells them quite inexpensively. I believe it has 16 flats on it. NAPA does not stock one.................
There are many parts on a Volvo that are not available on the after market! Volvo has you by the "suit case" when it comes to repair. If you are in a hurry, perhaps the dealer sells the filter wrench. You also can get the filter off by brute strength.................
I have used a strap-type filter wrench to remove the plastic housing on my C70.
It was not easy - a gorilla must have fitted it last time, but I felt pretty confident heaving on the wrench with the band at the top (i.e. screw end) of the housing.
Most likely a universal 3 jaw filter wrench will expensively chew holes in the housing.

I think Wix makes one. The guy at the indy store here said they carry the filter. Went to auto zone and the hoser gave me the metal screw in filter. Not happy when I found it was the wrong one.
