Default Oil leek

i thought my v70 has a rear crank case oil leek as putting a pint of oil in a day was soon lost. After getting the gearbox out and clutch and flywheel off we have found what I describe as a core plug. I’ve never seen one on other engines before. Why would this fail?

It’s behind the fly wheel and just above where it bolts to the crankshaft
