@HummerGuy
I replaced gas cap, purge valve, shuttoff valve, j-hose and since none of those helped and code kept coming back, we pressurized the system and that proved that fuel filler neck was bad, had two very little holes in it. Replaced it yesterday, put about 75 miles on it so far, no codes. My obd2 code reader shows that car is emission ready which means that everything is fine

I picked up parts today, took me about 1 1/2 hour to replace it. Pretty tight in there, had to drop the frame few inches. We'll see what happens from here on, got to drive it for a few miles.
Not to open another topic, today i got another code, P0073-ambient air temperature sensor circuit high input, and my ac is constantly on. Sensor must be showing hight temps. Where is this sensor located?

And I thought MY V70 had issues lol.
I just ordered the purge valve today. I REALLY hope I don't have to go through all that mess that you did. It hasn't happened for months but that valve is a 5 minute job so I figure I'd do it now and wait and see. So you had to physically drop the gas tank a bit to replace that part? What a pain.

Just a note on the filler neck hole.
I read about 01 V70s having this issue and it was due to the braided wire (looks like a ground strap of some sort) that wraps around the filler neck vibrating and sawing a hole in it. I unwrapped mine but kept it bolted to the intended connection.
My early build 04/00 V70 T5 had this wire. My late build 05/01 V70XC didn't have this wire.
Something to consider as preventive maintenance.

Would the 0442 cause an 0422 to throw also?
My 2001 V70 2.4T just had a CEL with those two codes above. The 0442 we know about.
The 0422 is "Main catalyst efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)"
What order should I go about troubleshooting this? If I can find the evaporative leak and fix it could that make the cat. conv. code go away?
Thanks!

j hose P0442
I know this is a stupid question but I have had the p0442 code come up and was going to look for the j hose and canister after crawing under the car yesterday i could not find it. I head that it could be on top of the tank is this true and if so do i need to drop the tank to replace it.
oh btw i have a 2002 v70xc

Well, with my car I was wrong about the code. I was getting P0402 and P0442 mixed up. My car was actually throwing a P0442 message and it was the Catalytic Converter. The problem was solved by replacing the fuel injectors. There is actually a Volvo factory maintenance service bulletin on this issue. When the fuel injectors start going bad, they dump too much fuel into the cylinder causing the mixture to get all screwey and causing the Cat to malfunction, causing the errors. The code is basically telling you there is a problem with the mixture, usually it runs too rich because the injectors are old. I replaced mine with OEM ones and that solved the problem. I also was exclusively using Shell 93 Octane and had the error come back once or twice after using the Shell V-Power stuff, so i switched back to a normal brand, ie; Speedway and it hasn't come back. Both times I switched back to shell as an experiment the error came back, but the error was coming on almost all the time regardless of fuel until I changed the injectors. I think there's just something about the mixture they use that causes the car not to like it, and since I used it almost exclusively for the almost 2 years I've had the car, I wonder if maybe that had something to do with the injectors going bad. I dunno. I'm no expert but I know for a fact that the only reason that error comes back now is if I use V-Power 93, which is why I stopped using it. Like I said, it used to do it regardless of fuel and octane before I replaced them. Now it's just iffy about that stuff, but I do have 116k miles on the car and a brand new Throttle Body that also went bad (covered by a 200k mile 10 year warranty). You may want to have that checked as well. Both of those could be causing the problem, but for me, the throttle body was a separate issue and even after replacing that, I still had the P0442 errors.

3 to 4 PSI is about that you need. But you need to find the canister and pinch the J hose before adding pressure. Then you add pressure for about 5 to 10 minutes then pinch the hose where you are feeding pressure and then watch to see if the pressure drops. You should really have a gauge there that you can pinch after the pressure source and before the car. This way you can watch for a pressure drop.
