Power parking brake question

We just got a July 2008 V70 and I am loving driving it BUT today I had an issue with the power parking brake.
Usually when pulling away I just find the biting point using the clutch and accelerator as if I had the usual handbrake and then just give it a bit more on the accelerator and away the car goes (in forward or reverse). Today, a couple of times I did this but the car pulled against the brake and a message came up saying to release the brake switch and then "release with foot brake", the first time I was on the level so that was okay but the second time I was facing up a steep incline so was getting a bit of roll back between taking my foot back off the brake an onto the accelerator (and I had a nice shiny BMW parked quite close behind me
). Eventually the only way to get going on this hill start was to turn the engine off and restart. Then the brake released perfectly as I pulled away.
What was I doing wrong to make the brake not release automatically? Any ideas much appreciated......
