Default electronic parking brake, early brake wear?

My wife has a 2008 XC70 with the electronic parking brake. She had to replace rear brake pads at less than 37,000 miles. Still plenty of pad on the front brakes.

The dealer service tech said they are seeing more rear brake pads go sooner with the cars having electronic parking brakes.

My question is if this system is having a problem releasing completely causing the rear pad to wear early. I find it hard to believe rear brake pads should be gone this soon and on the rear not the front.

Any thoughts from others on this?

Thanks for any input
Tim

I have an 09 S80 with EPB. from the way it was explained to me that under 30 MPH or so, the rear brakes actually do more than the front brakes on these cars. If you pay attention when low speed braking, you can feel the car pull to a stop, it is an odd feeling. but to answer the other part, 35-40K seems about right for rear pads on theses cars, I replaced mine at 41k. If the parking brake was sticking/not fully releasing, you would know/hear it.

Yes, the Factory pads will wear out sooner than good quality aftermarket pads. I recommend akebono brake pads.

eBay have plenty of wicked aftermarket pads, I don't really go for the manufacturers ones any more to be honest

I guess I have this big question about the wearing out of the rear brakes. If the car is designed to have the rear brakes apply more at lower speeds that the front brakes or first as I was told, why such a big difference in the brake size?

Look at the front brakes and rear brakes. The rear is significantly smaller that the front yet I am told they take more use in lower speeds and wear out faster. Doesn't make sense to not have a larger system in the back. At least match the size of the front.

While I am not a mechanic, something seems a bit out of wack with their design. Those brakes are certainly not inexpensive to replace so soon.

Thanks for letting me vent.
