leave the radio on for couple hrs. then put in the radio code. if you try 3 times and fail, start over. if no code avaible go to the dealer and they can get it.

Smile Radio anti-theft system (RATS)

The RATS is meant to prevent stolen radio from being used by thieves. Who would want to steal one of these is the real question..aint like it would fit into any conventional dashboard...but anyhow...if your radio display says OFF and you cant locate the little card that says Volvo Stereo and has a 4 digit code on it, you will need to contact a Volvo dealer to get the "code". Once you have the code you need to turn your ignition on to the number 1 position, turn the radio on, and then wait for 2 hours for it to reset to the CODE display. Then enter the code and you'll be off to the races again !! Remember, you only have 3 attempts to enter correct code or you will have to start all over. Good Luck.

You can also keep driving the car around and when you hit the 2 hour mark the radio will display CODE again. I was surprised when it happened to me.

You got lucky with that....my 1999 v70 insisted that I leave it in the #1 position for a full 2 hrs....the manual says to make sure lights are off to help conserve battery life. I wonder now whether disconnecting battery again would have caused it to return to the enter code prompt instead of waiting?

well i don't if it will make the code come up if the "off" is up on the display. i do know if you disconnect the battery when it is working right then code will display when you re-connect the battery.

crush, i am confused at the last message, I know I used to have a car that the a/c used to switch to econo mode and i would undo battery and it would re-set the system and then it would be cold air again. For some reason I could not accomplish the re-set with the volvo battery. Waiting 2hrs was frustrating yet it finally worked.

The car has to be on for 2 hours for the radio to reset. Disconnecting the battery will not work for the radio.

Ok, so yesterday I thought I needed a starter but it was the battery. Of course the radio did the "off" thing because I couldn't stop myself from punching in random numbers. My question is, my lights will not turn all the way off, the the running lamps/turn signal lights still stay on. Will this not drain my battery if I leave key in position 2 for 2-3hours??? Can't afford another battery. Someone else mentioned pulling fuse #7 to reset. Is that an option?

Man, you guys are killing me. You can go around the block 17 times if you want, the store doesn't open for 2 hours.

You can turn your running lights off for good if you'd like. I think that has always been a stupid feature for most people anyway, unless you live where it rains for 70% of the time or in Alaska where it's dark 70% of the time.
