What is the temp control at?
Usually the syrup smell is a heater core leaking.

 

I seem to smell it more when I have the A/C at or aroud 67 and lower when trying to cool the car. I rarely smell it when the heat is going.

 

I would still check for a heater core leaking.

The maybe check outside for leaks.
Do you get the smell with the recirc on or off?

 

I smell it regardless of recirc or not? it's a very faint syrupy smell. almost like anti-freeze.

 

It still might be the heater core leaking just not enough to come out of the heater box.

 

I agree with TECH. You have an antifreeze leak. That is what antifreeze smells like when the core leaks. Check your fluid. Check it again in a few days...................bet it will be lower in the radiator. TECH, have you ever been successful with Bars Leak for a Volvo heater core or has the plastic or "O" rings deteriated?

I don't use Bar's stop leak at all I have seen it clog up to many systems in all makes and models so I stay away from it.

 

assuming tech is right, what can I do to fix it?

The heater core isn't all that bad to replace.
