Default strange "grinding" noise behind dash

Hello all. This is my first post here but I was hoping to get some help. My wife has an 03 V70 with 75K miles on it. I don't know exactly when this noise started becasue my wife doesn't pay attention to this stuff but I noticed a noise that sounds like it is coming from behind the dashboard in front of the driver and it is like a rhytmic grinding noise. I had it at my local mechanic to get the car inspected and he heard the noise and thought it sounded like an electric motor either opening/closing or moving something. It happens at all times, at idle, without any a/c or heat on and happens on average every 45 seconds or so.

Does anyone have an idea on where to start to diagnose this noise?

Also do you guys have any success with the automatic wipers on your V70? When we bought ours the windshield had a chip in it so the dealer replaced it for us, I don't know if the (presumably) cheap replacement glass isn't reflecting the beam from the wiper sensor correctly or is this just an annoying issue with the auto wipers. Whenever it rains I end up turning the wipers on/off myself because the wipers never work correctly and the first setting is usually too fast for the amount of rain.

thanks in advance everyone

Default strange "grinding" noise behind dash

Good day nih,

I have just purchase a V70R 2006 a week a go and found a noise similar too the one you describe. The noise was even present without the engine running. I did read a lot on Volvo subject and found that the climate ctrl could turn the fan on to remove possible moisture in the climate system. So I did send the car too the dealer ASAP and ask. After 3 1/2 hrs, the technician found a Cell phone hide under the front seat. It was the sale's man phone vibrating each minute or soo for an incoming message... Could this be your problem?

Default V70 "bedsprings" squeak from driver's side dash

I'm having the same thing, maybe, with my 2000 V70 XC. Rhythmic, sort of grinding, but described by a passenger like somebody jumping up and down on a squeaky spring bed. The cabin temperature sensor is over the place in the dash where the noise resides. Is there a small fan back there to draw air past the sensor?
It starts when the electrical system is activated, either with or without the engine running. Sometimes it's quiet, usually it's not. Pretty annoying when it's not.
Anyone have a clue?
