Default system voltage high?

ok so i was with a friend in his car, 99 Volvo v70 ( or maybe 2000 model, i am not sure but its one of the 2). It drove fine, no lights on, than abs and tracs light started coming on and off, more like flickering. Few minutes later, bunch of other lights came on: battery light, abs and tracs, transmission light (arrow) and brake light on, obviously it went into limp mode. Scan showed one code, p0563 and it says system voltage high. So I am thinking it's the alternator but was wondering can bad alternator actually put the car in limp mode?? After few minutes of cooldown, we started it and it was fine for another 1/2 mile and we parked it, didnt want to risk anything. Go for alternator or...is there more to it?
thanks!

I would check all the grounds and battery/alternator connections on the car first to be sure all the connections are corrosion free.

Tech, we took a risk and bought used alternator from scrap yard for $50. Installed it and viola, that solved all the problems, no lights on, car runs fine again. I didnt know that alternator problems could actually send car into limp mode. Anyway, thats all set, got to post in another tread regarding his ac problems now

You should be able to buy a voltage regulator and install it in there and have a spare one now.
