Default tailgate on V70 won't open

2007 V70 D5. rest of central locking works. When I press the tailgate unlock button on the key I can hear a faint click coming from near the fuses area rear nearside corner. Could it be a microswitch or solenoid that normally opens the tailgate, but is faulty, in which case can it be opened manually? Should I pull off the carpet trim on the inside of the tailgate and will that allow the tailgate to be unlocked manually?

Default tailgate mended

Had to pull away enough of the internal trim to squeeze my hand down and managed to open the lock. Then undoing the screws gave access to the wiring. pulling apart the wiring connector and a spray of electrical cleaner, and push the connector back and it all works fine. Justvolvos in Southampton charged £10 for helping with this.
