Default TireRack winter tire suggestions?

I normally use Nokian Hakkapeliitta Q's on my Volvos, On the 2006 V70 I am going to buy tires through the Tire Rack to take advantage of the deal on steel wheels ($176 for 4). I am going to use the narrower 195/65/15 size in place of the stock 205/55/65. Tire Rack is recommending the Blizzak WS60 ( similar to WS50) They also have the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D and the Michelin X ice. anyone have experince with any of these tires?

I just bought a set of Pirelli Winter Carving Edge tires with steels for my '07 V70. I was leaning towards the X-Ice and the Winter Sport 3D, however my cousin had the X-Ice 2 years ago and he said they still had the same high pitch whine when driving on a wet road at 60+km/h. He's been using the Pirellis for the last 2 seasons on both his cars and loves them.

The Dunlops look like a great tire however I didn't persoanally know anyone using them.

You're a couple of days too late on an even better rim deal. I ordered my set last Thursday and paid $20 per steel rim!

Anyway, good luck with the purchase.

Chad

The last car that I used winter tires on was my '94 Mercedes E320 wagon (My V70 does quite well with all-weather tires in our relatively mild -Baltimore-winters) Over the 10 years that I drove the Merc, I used winter tires from Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone and Dunlop - the latter being the last ones fitted before I sold the car. The Dunlops were by a wide measure the best of the lot. They offered the best combination of bad weather traction, moderate noise and good dry road behavior.

I'll be getting a package from Tirerack in the next couple of weeks. They have the Bridgestone Blizzak REVO 1tires on clearance right now, for $58 each in 195/50R15. Those, along with some cheap alloys and shipping come to around $575... not bad!

Read the tire survey results for any of the tires you're considering... I use the to figure out which ones to buy.

I ended up getting the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on steel rims. ordered on Friday , the tires and wheels were delivered on Tuesday. Since I'm more into comfort instead of speed, I went with 205/65/15 which is a 1/2" taller that the stock 205/55/16 . I really like the extra air volume of the 65 series profile and 15 inch wheel diameter. It absorbs the bumps much better and I spill less latte'.

And the slightly narrower section will go better in the snow!
